Seven in Ten Voters Want New Congress to Increase Afterschool Funding
Voters See Afterschool Programs as Necessity for their Communities

Voters want the new Congress and their newly elected state and local officials to increase funding for afterschool programs, according to a public opinion survey conducted after the election. The poll found that 72% of voters agree that “our newly elected public officials in Congress should increase funding for afterschool programs,” and just 24% disagree. When asked if they’d support “increase[d] funding for afterschool programs even if it leads to a tax increase,” 69% of voters said they want funding to increase. 82% of voters agree that there should be some type of organized activity or safe place for children and teens to go after school every day that provides opportunities for them to learn.

Two in three voters say that afterschool programs “are an absolute necessity” for their community. For more information, please visit the Afterschool Alliance at: www.afterschoolalliance.org.

Important Grant Opportunity for Afterschool from DHR
Don't Miss Out!

GAIC is excited to disseminate a grant opportunity (Request for Qualified Contractors) to help provide youth development services in afterschool and/or summer program settings recently posted by the Department of Human Resources. This is a very important funding opportunity for afterschool and summer programs so we encourage you to share this immediately and often as a reminder.

To access the application link go to: http://ssl.doas.state.ga.us/PR Sapp/bid-documents/074270042700-040- 000000322776568.rtf

Important Notes and Tips

  1. The due date is March 2, 2007. The budget ranges from $45,000 to $500,000.
  2. There will be bidder's conferences in February in Atlanta, GA on February 9, 2007 (details are in the document.)
  3. If you have questions, do not contact DHR, as you will disqualify your organization from applying. Instead, contact the assigned officer (Anne Maize, 404-656-5916 or amaize@doas.ga.gov) from the Department of Administrative Services.
  4. Don't be intimidated by the page length - the application includes a sample contract, which makes the actual application seem longer than it is. Sections two and three of the application include all the information you will need in your proposal, which is where you should focus most of your attention.
