GAIC and Whitefoord Bring Georgia Legislators into the Wonderful World of Afterschool
Whitefoord

The Georgia House of Representatives Children and Youth Committee under the leadership of Chairman Judy Manning conducted a successful and highly engaging site visit to the afterschool program at Whitefoord Community Program (WCP) on February 22nd.

Whitefoord did an outstanding job of executing this exciting visit and successfully demonstrated their infrastructure of comprehensive, integrated programs and services that strengthen families and prepare children for school. Tour highlights included the school-based health clinic at Whitefoord Elementary School, the early-childhood development program, the Intel Computer Clubhouse, and the Bike Rite program. For more information on Whitefoord Community Program, please visit www.whitefoord.org.

Thanks to the competent staff at WCP for all their hard work and the Zeist Foundation for their generously providing transportation for the legislators. The education subcommittee will be touring WCP in the near future given that not all could attend due to the legislative schedule that day.

U.S. School Systems Increasingly Commit to Afterschool Programs
Northern Virginia School System Sets an Example

With over 14.3 million K-12th graders in this country taking care of themselves after the school day ends, more and more school administrators are recognizing the critical role of afterschool programs.

Fairfax County School System in northern Virginia is an example of a school system that sees the importance of afterschool programs. For the past couple of years, the majority of Fairfax County schools have had some sort of afterschool program, which meets two to three times a week; but beginning January 2007, all 26 middle schools in the county will offer an afterschool program. Each program is tailored to the particular interests of the school’s students, ranging from step and hip hop classes to drama and cooking workshops to yoga and Tae Bo classes.

An average of over 9,000 students attend an afterschool program in Fairfax County in any given week, and the attendance continues to grow. The $4 million cost of the afterschool activities is paid for by the Fairfax County School System, while Fairfax County contributes $3 million annually. Individual schools contribute teacher support and in-kind donations of facilities and equipment.

GAIC Focuses on Professional Development for Afterschool and Summer Learning

Research demonstrates that the single factor most necessary to provide quality afterschool programs for children and youth is a well-trained, relevant afterschool staff. GAIC believes there is great value to gaining further insights into what systems or efforts exist and how we can enhance these in our state. As a next step in furthering one of GAIC’s goals to strengthen Georgia’s professional development infrastructure, GAIC focused our first quarterly meeting on February 23, 2007 on this topic.

Consensus was reached in several areas: 1) there are a number of successes in the professional development field to build upon in Georgia. 2) Currently, these opportunities are not tied together well and still lack a number of components needed to assist youth development professionals for working with and preparing today’s youth for success. 3.) Discussion ensued on what a statewide professional development system could include and how we can work together to enhance and build upon existing systems.

Plan to join us at out next quarterly meeting on Tuesday, May 22nd where representatives selected to attend the Afterschool Academies working group will present highlights from the Columbia, SC meeting scheduled earlier in the month (May 8-10).
