Milledgeville Mayor Proclaims October 12th LIGHTS ON AFTERSCHOOL Day!

Over 750 people, including afterschool providers, community stakeholders, parents and students came together on October 19th in Milledgeville, Georgia to celebrate the community’s first Lights On Afterschool event. Mayor Richard Bentley issued a proclamation declaring that the City of Milledgeville is dedicated to “ensuring every child has access to a safe, engaging place where the lights are on and the doors stay open for all children afterschool.”

Linda Watson Kaufman, community leader and lead organizer of the event believes the event has the potential to boost community support for stronger afterschool programming, “Opportunity is emerging to work toward quality programming that hones in on skills, evaluates what our youth are learning, and finds ways to translate skills learned in afterschool programming to real life.” A joint community effort led by a team of 30 community members has grown out of the Lights On event. This group will collaborate and pool resources to enhance existing programs and apply for future funding streams – as well as collectively address issues facing afterschool programs in the area.

Chapin Hall 2006 Report: Exploring Youth Perspectives on Out-of-School Time

Chapin Hall Center for Children at the University of Chicago researchers recently released a report: Negotiating Among Opportunity and Constraint: The Participation of Young People in Out-of-School-Time Activities. The purpose is to explore young people’s perspectives on their use of out-of-school time and the influences, barriers, contexts, and processes that contribute to their choices and experiences. The study also explores the relationship between young people’s participation in out-of-school programs and their interests, aspirations, and assessments of the kinds of opportunities and barriers found within their families, schools and neighborhoods. Finally, it offers conclusions and recommendations about how to improve opportunities for young people based on the insights provided by them, including specific suggestions about approaches to outreach, access, ongoing engagement and program provision. New Survey Finds Afterschool Funding Precarious in Georgia

A new survey released recently finds that many of Georgia’s afterschool programs are fully subscribed but still unable to meet the demand in their communities. The web-based survey of 55 Georgia afterschool providers, who collectively serve more than 37,500 children, finds that budget cuts and stagnation are taking a toll on afterschool programs, and the youth and families they serve. Further findings show afterschool programs in Georgia are serving a high need population, serving more children than expected, and struggling to maintain their funding. Nearly all respondents say that more children in their communities could benefit from afterschool programs, if they were available. The top three barriers to participation in afterschool programs are transportation, lack of available slots, and older youth that need to work or care for younger siblings.
