Many students suffer the “summer slide,” or summer learning loss, with most students losing 2 months of mathematical skills, and low-income students typically losing another 2 – 3 months in reading every summer. Youth may also lose vital supports such as access to healthy meals, academic enrichment, social and emotional support, arts, sports, and connections to healthcare. High quality summer learning programs and camps ensure all children, regardless of identity or income, have the opportunity to stay engaged, learning, and thriving during the summer months.
