Literacy is an essential foundation of education as it helps build comprehension and communication skills that are necessary for school and job success. Children who are not proficient readers by third grade struggle with future learning and fall further behind leading to long term educational, employment, health, and safety consequences for children and their communities. Afterschool and summer learning programs provide students with the additional supports they need to help build a strong foundation in literacy, including reading, writing and critical thinking skills that pave the way for future learning.
